Are you clairvoyant? Can you tell the future? I’m guessing if you are reading this, the answer is no. Chances are good that if you could tell the future you would predict the winning lottery numbers and then we would never hear from you again. I’m talking about something a little different. You know when you are sitting at a hockey or football game and you can sense the camera is on you? Or when you look up at work and someone is staring at you? It has been argued that people in general have a sense that warns us of impending danger. This includes being able to tell when someone is sizing you up as potential prey. I know when I was playing serious hockey, and the guys I played with can tell you, I never got touched. I could feel the guys around me and hold onto the puck, avoid injury, and put the puck in the net. Plus, it looked like I was doing it effortlessly. I can remember those days. I remember blurs of players and goal pads and net. Very little else. Seeing videos of games afterwards were always surprising because they looked little like I thought the game should look. The same is with the rest of my life. I narrowly avoided a traffic accident because I felt a similar effect as when a huge bastard had me lined up on the hockey rink. A shiver in my medulla oblongata and a desperate search for the source of danger at the same time as engaging the fight or flight reflex. I have felt the same blip on the radar when a girl has been staring at me at the bar. Trust me. It very rarely happens so when it does every single thought and action is analyzed to the tenth degree. So the question is: Can I develop this feeling above what I already feel? It has never really been more than a sense that I need to look around and make sure everything around me is normal. I get it generally when someone is staring at me, and, I know other people get it, as I have a lot of spare time and I stare at people just to see if they clue in. Try it. It is kind of funny when someone looks up and then nearly craps their pants as they realize what they suspected was true. I know I am not alone. So what happens to you? Can you feel it? |
