Why in the world do we sometimes call women broads? It tends to be offensive to most women, but I bet if you asked them why they were offended they couldn’t tell you what being called a broad meant. Heck I can’t. I know ladies, it doesn’t matter why you are offended we men should just know better.

Paraphrasing from an internet post I found on the subject a broad is a female confederate, a female companion, or a woman of loose morals. Broad was originally used to describe a transit or entrance ticket (around 1914) and was stretched to include a woman being a ‘meal ticket’ for her pimp. This slang spread and made its way into the mainstream in the early 1930’s. Further digging shows that broad is commonly used in prison to depict the male who takes the woman’s role in homosexual sex.

Admittedly I may have encountered a few women with loose morals over the years, but aren’t those the best kind? Seriously though, for the most part the sexual innuendo of the term has fallen by the wayside. I can’t say I’ve used the word broad recently, but when I have I’m sure I wasn’t using it to indicate that the woman I was referring to was a prostitute. In fact my last recollection would be saying “look at that broad” to a fellow male. Suggesting that she was something to look at, so in a way a compliment. Again ladies I apologize I am objectifying you and likely offending you. I know it’s horrible that I sneak a peak at you and think you’re stunning. I will stare at the ground next time and ignore the revealing outfit you are wearing.
